Are Millennials the Least Responsible Drivers on the Road?
A study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety from August to September of 2016 surveyed over 2,500 licensed drivers, revealing that Millennials are worse than any other group of drivers on the road.
The study found that nearly 90% of drivers ages 19 to 24 engaged in risky behaviors like texting and driving, running red lights, or speeding – making them the most dangerous and irresponsible driver group on the road.
Of the 2,511 drivers surveyed, the following was found:
- Millennial drivers acknowledged sending texts or email while driving nearly twice as much as other groups of drivers
- Almost 50% of millennials admitted to running red lights even if they were able to safely stop, compared to 36% of other drivers
- Only 5% of other drivers said it was acceptable to drive 10mph over the speed limit, whereas 12% of millennial drivers held that same opinion
These dangerous trends also coincide with a rise in traffic deaths in recent times. From 2015 to 2016, a 7% increase was observed, which marked the largest single year jump in 50 years.
