Qualifying for Medicaid

Medicaid is a government program that provides free or low-cost healthcare coverage to some lower-income people, families, pregnant women, the elderly, and those suffering from disabilities. Many states have individually expanded their Medicaid programs to cover all people who fall below a certain income level, and whether you qualify or not will partially depend on your state’s requirements.

Who Can Receive Medicaid?

  • Regardless of which state you live in, you may qualify for Medicaid benefits based on your income, size of your household, family status, and more. If your state has expanded Medicaid benefits, then you will be able to qualify based solely on income.
  • 32 states have expanded Medicaid, though Florida is not considering it at this time. To get an idea of whether or not you are eligible for benefits, there is a convenient tool that only takes a couple of minutes to use, and will give you a good idea of your eligibility.
  • If you do not qualify for Medicaid, you may qualify for financial help to purchase a healthcare plan on the Government Marketplace instead. Head over to HealthCare.gov to make a free account.

If you are turned down for Medicaid, don’t fret. There are private health options available through the Marketplace for the 2018 year in the fall. You may also qualify for savings based on your income through a tax credit and reduced out-of-pocket costs.

Florida Medicaid application rules and eligibility can be very complex, and there are many rules that need to be adhered to in order to be approved. Hiring an attorney to help with the process is a great way to ensure that all bases are covered to make sure you get the benefits you are entitled to by law.
